Every downsizing agent has a piano story. Ours has several.
The piano your mother played. The upright your daughter took lessons on for eight years. The baby grand in the formal living room you barely use anymore. Big, heavy, beautiful, meaningful, and one of the single hardest pieces to figure out when you are moving to a smaller home.
If you are staring at your piano and wondering what to do, here is the guidance we give customers who find themselves in exactly this spot.
Start with an Uncomfortable Truth
The market for used pianos is not what it used to be. Many pianos that families paid two or three thousand dollars for decades ago are now genuinely difficult to give away, let alone sell. This is not a reflection of what your piano meant to your family. It is just the reality of the current market for used uprights and older grands.
Knowing this upfront saves you months of frustration trying to sell something at a price the market will not support.
Ask the Family First, and Ask Specifically
Before you decide anything, offer the piano to the specific family member most likely to want it. Not a general “does anyone want the piano” text to the group chat. A direct, one-on-one conversation with your daughter, your son, or the grandchild who took lessons.
Be prepared for the answer to be no. Adult children often love the memory of the piano but do not have the space, the interest, or the movers’ budget to take it. That is not a rejection of you or your home. Pianos are hard to move and hard to house.
If the answer is yes, wonderful. Coordinate the move together and let it become part of the next chapter of the family.
If the Family Passes, Consider These Options
Sell it, but be realistic. List it locally on Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist at a price that reflects the current used piano market. Well-known brands like Steinway, Yamaha, and Baldwin hold value better than lesser-known makes. Newer pianos in excellent condition move faster than older ones.
Donate it. Local schools, churches, community centers, and some Jacksonville nonprofits accept working pianos, though not all of them do and demand varies. Call before you assume they will take it. A tuned, playable piano is a real gift to the right organization.
Give it away. Sometimes the best outcome is passing it to a neighbor, a friend, or a young musician who cannot afford one of their own. Many downsizing customers tell us the person who took their piano ended up being more grateful than a paying buyer would have been.
Have it removed. If the piano cannot find a home, professional piano removal services exist and are worth the cost. They will handle the heavy lifting and the disposal.
A Word About Moving It
If you do decide to take your piano to the new home, do not use a general moving company for it. Pianos require specialized movers who understand how to handle the weight, the tuning implications, and the potential for damage. A general mover attempting to move a grand piano is how pianos get destroyed.
The specialty move costs more, and it is worth every dollar.
The Emotional Part
Letting go of a family piano is not really about the piano. It is about the years of lessons, the recitals, the holiday songs, the person who used to play it. Those things are not stored in the wood and wire. They are stored in you.
We have watched customers agonize over this decision. What we tell them is this. The piano is a physical object. The music your family made on it is not, and it goes with you no matter what you decide.
How We Help
When downsizing customers ask us about the piano, we can usually point them to specialty piano movers, local organizations that sometimes accept donations, and a realistic sense of what the used piano market in Northeast Florida is currently doing.
The piano question does not have to derail your downsizing decision. It just needs a plan.
